A handsome early 20th-century Macmillan edition of The Works of Tennyson, this is a substantial single-volume collection for readers who love Victorian poetry and old-school literary heft.

It gathers Tennyson’s major poems and longer works, including In Memoriam, lyrical favorites, dramatic pieces, and scholarly notes in one thick volume.

This copy also carries a wonderful layer of reader history: previous-owner names, dated ownership inscriptions, and pencil notes in the margins that give it real lived-with character.

  • Sound vintage reading copy with attractive shelf presence. Green cloth boards show rubbing and edge wear, especially at corners, spine ends, and along the rear joint. Gilt spine lettering remains readable.
  • Page edges are heavily toned/goldened with age, and the text pages show expected age toning throughout. Pencil notes and underlining appear on some pages, with handwritten ownership and study notes on front endpapers and in margins.
  • A slight split is visible at the back board binding/joint as shown, but the book remains intact and usable. No dust jacket present. See all photos for exact condition and wear.

Condition Grade Key
Near Fine: minimal wear; tight; clean.
Very Good: light wear; clean text; minor flaws.
Good: noticeable wear; sound reading copy; some marks.
Fair: heavy wear; complete but worn; priced accordingly.

Provenance & Notes

Front ownership writing appears to name Lilla B. Bacon, with 543 So. Division, Ann Arbor, Mich., and the date 1917 written inside. Additional pencil notes suggest this was a genuinely used personal reading or study copy rather than a purely decorative shelf book.
