This raw edge red alabaster ashtray is a substantial mid century stone smoking piece, likely dating from the 1960s to 1970s, with a polished center bowl and three cigarette rests.

The mottled red, rust, coral, cream, and amber coloring gives this 6 pound 12 ounce piece a strong sculptural presence even when it is not being used as an ashtray. The broad polished top contrasts with the irregular rough stone exterior, making it well suited to a mid century room, home bar, coffee table, or tobacciana collection.

Similar raw edge alabaster ashtrays were produced in Italy during this period, but this example has no visible country or maker mark, so Italian origin is not confirmed.

Positives

  • Graded Very Good: The ashtray remains solid and presents well, with the carved bowl and three cigarette rests intact.
  • The polished upper surface retains a strong sheen and clearly shows the natural mottled coloring of the stone.
  • The substantial weight gives the piece a stable, solid feel.
  • Three pads remain attached to the underside to help protect the surface beneath it.

Issues / Wear

  • The underside shows visible surface scratches and handling marks from previous use.

  • The polished areas show light surface wear consistent with previous handling and use.
  • No maker, country of origin label, or identifying signature is visible.

Collector's Notes

Large carved stone ashtrays became substantial tabletop accessories during the mid century period. Similar alabaster examples were made in several European stone working centers, including Italy.

The three cigarette rests and deep center well make the original smoking purpose clear, while the weight and natural stone coloring also give it appeal to collectors of mid century barware and tobacciana.

This piece measures more than 8 inches across. Its size, raw perimeter, and broad polished surface give it considerably more visual presence than a small personal ashtray.

It can also sit comfortably on a coffee table or shelf as a piece of vintage stonework when its original smoking function is no longer needed.
