This Lomonosov Turkey Bird Salt and Pepper Shaker Set was made by the Leningrad Lomonosov Porcelain Factory in the former USSR. The larger turkey carries the red LFZ export mark with “MADE IN USSR.”

Deep cobalt blue, warm orange, white porcelain, and delicate gold accents give these stylized birds the lively folk art character associated with Lomonosov decorative porcelain.

]They make a colorful addition to a Russian porcelain collection, bird display, Thanksgiving table, or vintage kitchen.

Positives

  • Graded Good: Both porcelain birds are complete and display well, with missing base stoppers affecting practical use.
  • No chips or cracks were found during handling or seen in the supplied photographs.
  • The glazed porcelain surfaces feel smooth.
  • The cobalt blue, orange, white, and black colors remain bright and glossy.
  • The larger turkey retains its sculptural fan shaped tail, raised wing details, shaker holes, and dark pedestal foot.
  • The smaller bird retains its long tail, red breast, gold line decoration, and shaker holes.
  • The red LFZ factory and export mark remains clearly readable on the larger shaker.

Issues and Wear

  • Both cork stoppers are missing from the filling holes in the bases.
  • Because the stoppers are missing, these are best suited to decorative display unless properly sized replacement corks are added.
  • Minor variations and light rubbing may be present in the hand applied gold colored decoration.
  • Only the larger shaker is shown with a factory mark. No mark is confirmed on the smaller bird.

Collector's Notes

The red ЛФЗ monogram represents Leningradski Farforovyi Zavod, the Leningrad Lomonosov Porcelain Factory. The factory used the LFZ monogram during the Soviet period. The English “MADE IN USSR” wording identifies the larger bird as export ware.

Reference guides associate red LFZ marks with first quality porcelain. The red mark helps identify the factory grading, but it does not mean that the surviving piece remains flawless after years of ownership.

The larger bird is generally identified as a turkey because of its broad fan shaped tail and full body. The smaller companion is a streamlined long tailed bird with a red breast.

The combination of cobalt blue and white porcelain with orange and gold colored details gives the pair a particularly strong display presence. They work well as Soviet porcelain collectibles even without replacement corks.
