Earth, Plants, Animals, People — Before “Ecology” Was a Household Word

Lorus and Margery Milne wrote The Balance of Nature as a serious attempt to explain biocycles — the interdependence of species, the role of each organism in sustaining the whole — in terms a general reader could follow without losing any of the science. Published in 1961, it’s one of the earlier accessible ecology books written for a mainstream audience, a few years before Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring moved the conversation into the mainstream.

If you read ecology history or collect natural science books from this period, the Milnes are writers worth knowing. Dust jacket has slight wear. Interior is solid.

Collector’s Notes

Lorus and Margery Milne were Harvard-trained naturalists who wrote prolifically for both academic and general audiences throughout the 1950s–70s. The Balance of Nature (1961) predates the modern environmental movement and reads as a clear-eyed scientific account of how ecosystems actually function. A good copy for environmental history collections, natural science libraries, or anyone tracing the intellectual lineage of modern ecology.

How Reading Vintage sources and grades every book

Good to Know Before You Buy

Yes. Every photo on this page is the actual item you will receive. Not a stock photo, not a similar copy. What you see is what ships.

Honestly. This is vintage, so expect some age. When I find wear, writing, stains, loose pages, chips, or missing pieces, I note them and show them in the photos. Some marks add character. Some are just flaws. I tell you which is which so you can decide if this is the right one for you.

With care. Old books and fragile pieces are wrapped and boxed so they arrive the way they left me. Careful packing is one of the things buyers mention most in their reviews. Orders of $35 or more ship free.

Probably not. Everything here is one of a kind, and I rarely find the same item twice. Once it sells, it is gone. Vintage does not restock neatly.
