A wonderfully practical vintage copy of The American Woman’s Cook Book, edited by Ruth Berolzheimer, and packed with classic American home cooking, menu planning, kitchen guidance, and old-school household know-how.
This is the kind of cookbook readers actually use: breads, fish, poultry, desserts, preserves, cooking-for-two ideas, and plenty of smart cooking hacks tucked throughout.
The tabbed format makes it especially fun to browse, and the color food plates give it that unmistakable mid-century kitchen appeal. Photo-verified and full of usable recipes, this is a strong pick for cooks, collectors, and lovers of vintage domestic reference.
Positives:
Complete-looking vintage cookbook with strong shelf presence and very usable interior layout. Tabbed sections are intact and make browsing easy. Interior pages appear readable, with attractive color food plates and a solid text block. A great kitchen reference copy with loads of practical recipes and cooking hints.
Issues / Wear:
Much wear overall. Cloth boards show rubbing, fraying, edge wear, corner wear, and surface wear. Spine and extremities show noticeable wear and cloth loss, especially at corners and head and tail. Cover design remains visible but is rubbed. Page edges are toned from age and handling. Tabs show wear from use. No dust jacket present. See all photos for detail—sold as pictured.
Condition Grade Key
Near Fine: minimal wear; clean.
Very Good: light wear; clean; minor flaws.
Good: noticeable wear.
Fair: heavy wear; complete but worn; priced accordingly.
Copyright page shown lists 1938, 1939, 1940, and 1941 for Consolidated Book Publishers, Inc., Chicago, Illinois. The contents shown include sections on breads, fish, poultry and game, desserts, preserves, cooking for two, food for invalids, high altitude cooking, and more, making this a broad household cookbook rather than a narrow specialty title.
Ruth Berolzheimer was known for editing widely used American cookbooks aimed at helping home cooks manage everyday meals with confidence and efficiency. This book reads like a full-service kitchen manual, combining recipes, planning advice, and practical household cooking knowledge in one sturdy volume.
This is the kind of cookbook that earns its wear honestly.
