This Boston & Maine B & M R R railroad padlock is a heavy iron trackside lock dated 1928 and accompanied by its chain and marked brass key.

I would choose this piece for a railroadiana collection, New England railroad display, or an industrial collection where the original markings matter. The dark worn surface and oxidation look right for working railroad hardware of this age rather than decorative reproduction hardware.

Positives

  • Graded Good: This is a complete-looking railroad lock assembly with the lock, chain, and key all present and showing substantial age without obvious missing major hardware.
  • The "B & M R R" railroad marking is an important identifying feature and gives the piece a direct connection to Boston & Maine Railroad use.
  • The heavy chain remains attached, and the key is still with the lock. Those surviving parts make the piece more interesting as railroad hardware than the lock body alone.
  • The shackle is shown in the open position in the photos, and the brass key is shown inserted in the lock.

Issues / Wear

  • The iron surfaces show widespread oxidation, pitting, rubbed finish, dark discoloration, and small areas of exposed brown rust consistent with long use and storage.
  • The chain has matching oxidation and surface wear. I consider much of this wear part of the appeal on genuine railroad hardware, but buyers wanting clean restored metal should expect a rough aged surface here.
  • The brass key has tarnish and darkened areas from age and handling.
  • Locking operation has not been independently confirmed beyond the open position shown in the photos.

Condition Grade Key

  • Near Fine: Almost perfect. Very minor signs of age only.
  • Very Good: Shows light use. Sound and attractive with minor flaws.
  • Good: Complete and intact. Noticeable wear consistent with age and use.
  • Fair: Shows significant wear. Readable or usable but clearly used.

Collector's Notes

Railroads used heavy keyed locks like this to control access to switches, equipment, signal hardware, and other trackside property.

Boston & Maine Railroad material has a strong New England connection and suits a collector focused on railroad tools, locks, keys, or line-specific memorabilia.

The reported 1928 stamp, B & M R R shackle lettering, attached chain, and surviving marked key give this piece several useful identifying details in one assembly.

I like the surface left as it is. The wear reads as working industrial history rather than something polished into looking new.

How Reading Vintage sources and grades every piece

Good to Know Before You Buy

Yes. Every photo on this page is the actual item you will receive. Not a stock photo, not a similar copy. What you see is what ships.

Honestly. This is vintage, so expect some age. When I find wear, writing, stains, loose pages, chips, or missing pieces, I note them and show them in the photos. Some marks add character. Some are just flaws. I tell you which is which so you can decide if this is the right one for you.

With care. Old books and fragile pieces are wrapped and boxed so they arrive the way they left me. Careful packing is one of the things buyers mention most in their reviews. Orders of $35 or more ship free.

Probably not. Everything here is one of a kind, and I rarely find the same item twice. Once it sells, it is gone. Vintage does not restock neatly.
