This little Scottie dog has clearly spent years keeping watch over someone’s desk. Made by Hershey in Derby, Connecticut, the textured cast metal terrier is secured to a square green marbled base with its original screws.
A cylindrical opening in the dog’s back was designed to hold a removable desk accessory, most likely a pen or pencil insert.
Fair vintage condition with substantial visible wear. The dog has widespread paint loss, surface oxidation, greenish patina, scratches, and scuffs. The base has surface scratches, cloudy areas, discoloration, and small marks from age and use. No cracks or major breaks were observed in the base or dog. The two mounting screws remain in place. The original pen, pencil, lighter, or other removable insert is missing. Please review every photo closely, as the wear is part of this piece’s condition and character.
Comparable Hershey Scottie dog pieces are generally identified as desk pen or pencil holders from the early twentieth century. Some similar hollow-backed dog figures are also described as novelty lighter holders, so the exact original insert for this example is not confirmed. The green base resembles Bakelite or Catalin, but the material has not been chemically tested and is described here as phenolic resin.
