This is an authentic milk glass marmalade jar from James Keiller & Son Ltd., established in Dundee, Scotland, in 1797. The company is credited as the world's first commercial producer of marmalade.

This specific jar dates to the mid-20th century, when the company switched from stoneware crocks to these elegant glass jars with metal lids.

It comes complete with its original metal lid—a significant find, as many jars have been separated from theirs over the decades.

Collector's Notes

James Keiller & Son marmalade jars have become serious collectibles in recent years. The company's history is remarkable: it began when a ship carrying Seville oranges sought refuge in Dundee Harbor in the late 1700s. The oranges were sold to a local merchant, James Keiller, whose mother Janet began making marmalade from the fruit. The business grew so successful that by the end of the 19th century, Keiller marmalade was shipping to Australia, New Zealand, India, and China.

The switch from stoneware crocks to milk glass jars in 1928 marks an important inflection point for collectors. Mid-century milk glass examples like this are increasingly sought for farmhouse styling, vintage kitchen collections, and anyone who appreciates honest British manufacturing history.

A real piece of marmalade history—one that still speaks to quality and tradition every time you look at it on your shelf.
