Lorus and Margery Milne wrote The Balance of Nature as a serious attempt to explain biocycles — the interdependence of species, the role of each organism in sustaining the whole — in terms a general reader could follow without losing any of the science. Published in 1961, it’s one of the earlier accessible ecology books written for a mainstream audience, a few years before Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring moved the conversation into the mainstream.
