Imagine a brave cocker spaniel racing through forests, thwarting burglars, and standing up to savage dogs—all while stealing the heart of a determined young woman.
In this 1942 tale inspired by a real-life pup, Major S. P. Meek tells the story of Rusty—a little dog dismissed by most but cherished by Ruth Hilton from the moment she spots him in a pet shop window. Ruth’s fiancé scoffs at her choice, but she brings Rusty home anyway.
What follows is a year filled with excitement and danger: from burglars to a forest fire, Rusty’s loyalty is tested over and over. Originally sparked by Meek’s experience at a cocker spaniel field trial, this fictional account adds a dash of old-fashioned adventure to the everyday life of a devoted dog-owner.
Sterner St. Paul Meek (1894–1972) served in the U.S. military as a chemist and ordnance expert, retiring as a colonel. Post-retirement, he became a full-time writer, known for both children’s books and early science fiction.
Drawing upon his keen observation skills and scientific background, Meek brought authenticity and excitement to his dog-centered stories.
