Estate sale season is in full swing, and this Sunday, I spent a couple of days in Flint, Michigan, hunting for vintage books. I stopped at three different estate sales, each offering its own surprises.
One sale stood out—a home once belonging to noted Flint artist Woodcroft, known for his life-sized clay depictions of famous people. Most taller than I. Walking through his creative space felt like stepping into a piece of local history, and among his things, I discovered a few books too good to pass up.
Here are three of my favorite finds that will be added to Reading Vintage soon.
Summer is a great time to shop for vintage books. Estate sales and cleanouts bring long-forgotten treasures out of storage. Collectors know this is the season when rare, well-loved books have the best chance of resurfacing—and once they’re gone, they’re gone.
Grow your garden with confidence using Jack Kramer’s classic guide, 1000 Beautiful Garden Plants and How to Grow Them. Complete with 247 pages of expert tips, 1,000 line drawings, 8 vivid color plates and 35 photographs, this hardcover edition makes planting a breeze.
This mid-century nature book captures North American birds in detailed illustrations and descriptions. Pages feature species like the Gyrfalcon and Caracara, blending science and artistry in a way that feels timeless. A book that appeals to birders, naturalists, and anyone who appreciates fine vintage illustration.
This old-school manual offers step-by-step instructions, diagrams, and tips for repairing cars from a hands-on era. For classic car enthusiasts, it’s part reference, part collectible, and a reminder of when car repair was truly DIY.
Each book tells a story beyond its subject matter:
Vintage books like these give us more than information—they connect us to the time and culture that shaped them.

These three titles are part of a larger Flint haul that will be listed in the shop this week. As always, every book will include detailed descriptions and photos so you can see exactly what you’re getting.

Finding books like these is why I love what I do. Each estate sale offers a glimpse into another person’s library, and sometimes their history. It’s a privilege to rescue these books and pass them on to new readers and collectors.
Stay tuned—there are plenty more treasures to come.
Keep it bookish, Pam
