We all have that one quote we swear we’ve memorized—until we check the original and realize… oops. Literary misquotes are everywhere, passed around like bookmarks that lost the actual page.
If you love saving quotes in your planner, sharing them on socials, or using them in your writing, this quick list is for you.
Let’s bust a few famous myths—and keep our favorite lines accurate and inspired.
✅ Real quote (Gandhi-inspired):
“If we could change ourselves, the tendencies in the world would also change.” – Mahatma Gandhi
The shorter version? Lovely. Just not his actual words.
✅ Real quote:
“The blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb.”
Surprise—this one originally meant the opposite of how we use it today.
✅ Real quote:
“Well-behaved women seldom make history.” – Laurel Thatcher Ulrich
Often quoted without credit to the actual author—a historian, not a pop star.
✅ Real quote:
“Not all those who wander are lost.” – J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring
This one’s correct—but so often misattributed to random memes or anonymous wisdom.
✅ Real quote:
Sherlock Holmes never actually said that in any of Arthur Conan Doyle’s books.
It was added later in movies and pop culture.
Misquotes spread fast—especially online. But knowing the real words behind iconic lines gives you the edge as a thoughtful reader and trusted quote-sharer.

“When in doubt, cite it out.”
“A good quote doesn’t just decorate your writing—it deepens it.”'
Happy quoting,
