How to Photograph & Catalog Your Beatrix Potter Figurines

September 12, 2025

 Beatrix Potter Figurines Buyer’s Checklist

Made for Beatrix Potter Beswick collectors—beginner-friendly, no fluff, just what works.

Why this matters

Good photos and simple care routines do two things: protect value and build trust. Clear, accurate images help you date a figure, show condition honestly, and sell with confidence.

Proper care keeps glaze bright and ears intact. Let’s keep it simple and repeatable.

Set up your catalog (quick and painless)

Choose one home for your records: Google Sheets, Excel, Notion, or GoodNotes. Paper binder works too.

Then make one folder per character on your phone or drive. Use three simple status codes to stay organized: H = Have, W = Want, D = Duplicate/Variant.

Why it works: One place + one system = fewer accidental doubles and faster decisions at the point of purchase.

What to record (copy these fields)

Keep entries short and repeatable. You’re building a tool, not a novel.

  • Character (e.g., Jemima Puddle-Duck)
  • Maker/Brand (Beswick or Royal Albert)
  • Backstamp family (BP1, BP2, BP3, or RA)
  • Variant / Model no. (if known; else “Not provided”)
  • Approx. Era (e.g., 1950s–1970s)
  • Height × Width × Depth (inches)
  • Condition grade (Near Fine, Very Good, Good, Fair)
  • Notes on flaws (chips, crazing, touch-ups—be specific)
  • Acquired from / Date / Price
  • Display location (Cabinet 1, Shelf B, etc.)
  • Comps link (URL to a similar sold example)
  • Photo files (filenames)
  • Status (H/W/D)

One-line example:
Jemima Puddle-Duck | Beswick | BP3b | Not provided | 1970s | 4.75x2.5x2 | Very Good | faint crazing on skirt back | Midland estate sale, 2025-08-10, $85 | Cabinet 1 | eBay sold link | jemima_bp3b_front.jpg | H

Photograph once, use forever

Think documentation over drama. Your goal is color-true images that make backstamps and flaws easy to see.

Fast setup

  • Bright window or 5000K lamp; turn off yellow room lights.
  • Plain white/gray background (foam board works).
  • Phone stable (stand/books). Flash off. HDR on.
  • Add a ruler or 2" reference card in one shot.

The six shots collectors expect

  • Front (full height)
  • Left ¾
  • Right ¾
  • Back (tails, baskets, capes)
  • Base macro (backstamp sharp and readable)
  • Flaw macro (chips, hairlines, glaze skips)

Simple filenames

Color check: If a sheet of white paper looks yellow in your photo, your light is too warm. Move to daylight or switch bulbs.

Honest grading—say it like you see it

Use short, plain phrases and match them with macros.

  • Near Fine: No chips/cracks; even glaze; no visible crazing in normal light.
  • Very Good: Light shelf rub to base; faint stable crazing at back; no chips.
  • Good: Pinhead chip to ear tip; fine crazing to skirt; stable.
  • Fair: Repaired tail; color difference visible under bright light.
  • Rule of thumb: If you mention a flaw, show the flaw.

Avoid doubles (unless you collect variants)

Before you buy, filter your catalog by Character and Backstamp on your phone. If you keep intentional duplicates, mark them D and write why: “D—boxed Royal Albert; upgrading later to BP1.”

Track an upgrade path: if your current piece is “Good,” add a wish for “Near Fine” or an earlier backstamp.

Three pocket codes for estate-sale days

  1. H = Have
  2. W = Want (note backstamp/era)
  3. D = Duplicate/Variant (reason)

Show your shelf (and enjoy it)

You’re allowed to be proud of your collection. Organize by story, character, or era. Add a small shelf card: character, backstamp, year window. Take a quarterly cabinet photo from the same angle; it’s a simple way to see progress and share highlights with friends or your club.

Caption template for social or catalog:
“Jemima Puddle-Duck • Beswick BP3b • ~4.75 in • Very Good • faint crazing on skirt back.”

Gentle care that preserves value

  • Dust: Soft makeup brush or blower bulb. No abrasives.
  • Light: Out of direct sun; steady room temp; ~40–50% RH.
  • Handling: One figure at a time, support the base and body.
  • Storage: Acid-free tissue; cushion ears and beaks; avoid attic/garage extremes.
  • Repairs: Note who/when/cost in your catalog. Always disclose.

Tip: Skip harsh cleaners, soaking, or felt pads hiding the base. Collectors want to see marks.

Monthly maintenance (15 minutes, done)

  1. Add new purchases with photos.
  2. Update grades if you spot a change.
  3. Snap a cabinet overview for your “By Character” album.
  4. Review your Want list before the next hunt.

Keep going

When you need to confirm a back stamp or narrow the era, open Beatrix Potter Beswick Figurines: The Definitive Collector’s Guide in a new tab. Use the quick chart, update your entry, and move on with confidence. Simple habits today prevent shelf confusion tomorrow—and make your collection easier to share and enjoy.
